We get questions about receiver recommendations and we typically stay with brands we have experience with. We have never had someone come back at us to complain about a Denon, Yamaha, or Marantz receiver. We run these in our homes everyday so we feel confident recommending them to you. But there are other brands that have loyal followings that you may want to consider. These brands are typically more expensive and full featured. As always Ara and Braden, a great and informative podcast. My setup is 5:1 partly because of space and as you said, the amount of time the extra speakers are effective, is limited.
My receiver is a 3-year-old Yamaha chosen partly because at the time, Yamaha include FM and a DAB/DAB+ digital radio receiver instead of an AM one. It would be really interesting to hear about the state of digital and high-quality radio in the USA. There are a few denigrators of DAB Radio as they want much higher bit rates but for the majority, it works well and now coverage is much better, listening on the move is practically seamless.
The BBC offers high bit rate (320kbs) via the internet and uses a MPEG AAC Low Complexity (AAC-LC) codec for all their main stations in the UK. Outside the UK, it is limited to (128kbs) but still reasonable quality.
Again, thank you both for an amazing service over the years and achieving 1111 episodes has clearly required an enormous commitment.
