Most of the TVs on the top 10 list on Amazon are impulse items purchased along with some Fruit of the Loom undies, the latest John Sanford book and some bug spray. The buyer does not see a need to actually see the TV in person in this price range. If the customer "star ratings are OK, it is easy to proceed., If they are unhappy, they can of course send it back at Amazon expense.

The brands that you mention not being high on the Amazon list are targeting more expensive sets (Sony, Panasonic etc.) that are naturally going to be lower volume, even on Amazon. When spending a thousand dollars and up on a set, I would expect the buyer to want to visit a showroom and compare the possible products with the help of a knowledgeable person. Necessarily, these types of sets will be lower volume. Buyers in this category also are probably purchasing some installation services too.

The market has just evolved to the point that brands now stake out segments that they want to emphasize.

I recently purchased some earbuds on Amazon that are the most popular on the site. $9.99 total cost. Same theory. Easy to take a chance on a popular item, highly rated, low price and a best seller. Not a premium product but worth what I paid. If I was spending a few hundred dollars or more on earbuds or a headset, I would go to a store and listen first, even if they are on Amazon and are highly rated.
