Podcast #687: What to watch, What not to watch
It’s that time of year again. The time when television executives clean the slate to prepare room for the new shows that will debut next fall. Also the time when you get to go through your scheduled or recurring recordings, your season passes, and clean out the ones that have been cancelled. Every year something gets cut too early. Hopefully one of your favorites isn’t on that list.

I really am sad about Backstrom, Battle Creek and even a little about Forever being cancelled. Backstrom and Battle Creek were, as Braden said, quirky...and fun. I'll miss them. I wonder if Backstrom has any chance of going to a different venue. It couldn't be overly expensive to produce, other than the chance of losing Dennis Haysbert to some higher paying job. He could be replaced or even just ignored.
Same situation for Battle Creek. Very fun watching Mayhem working as a cop. They actually have a better chance of losing Josh Duhamel, though, and he is completely essential to the show continuing. Oh, well. It annoys me when I get attached to a mid-season show and it gets cancelled. This doesn't happen as often to me with begging in-of-season shows. It's much easier to spot the failures.
Forever was, for me, a pale copy of New Amsterdam, which starred Jamie Lannister six or seven years ago. But it was improving and I wanted to see how it turned out.
Now iZombie is a very fun guilty pleasure for me and I can't understand how Braden isn't watching this one. It would seem to be right up his alley. I'd suggest he give it a shot when they go to reruns. At this point you probably have to have seen it from the beginning to follow some of the story lines. Oh, well. Ara will just have to try harder to get him into it. Show him the first one!
Maybe there were a couple of surprises but these are the only three cancellations I have any feeling for.
There were only a couple of disappointments in this years cancellation.
I enjoyed Forever. It was getting better and had a cool setting, an immortal working as a coroner.
The other one I was disappointed to see cancelled was Constantine. There is talk of either CW or Netflix picking it up. It would fit into CW's already heavy DC lineup easily enough. I hope it survives but will not be surprised if it doesn't.
There are two shows that I am happy are coming back and both are in Netflix. Daredevil is an excellent show. It is so much better than the movie from several years ago. However, it is a bit graphic.
The other show is Longmire. It ran for 3 seasons on A&E and is running for a 4th on Netflix. It is a good procedural with a nice underlying mystery running through the series. The first 3 seasons are in Netflix now.
