Podcast #581: TV Buying Trends and an Interview with OpenRemote.org
We like to occasionally take a look at the top selling products at Amazon as a barometer of what is occurring in the larger Consumer Electronics market. Sometimes what we find shocks us, other times is confirms our suspicions, and sometimes it just flat out doesn’t make any sense at all. Yesterday we took a look at the top 10 selling HDTVs. What we found was in some ways surprising, but it certainly wasn’t shocking.

Trends / Observations
- Samsung has always dominated this list, and at 4 of the top 10, they remain an incredibly strong player. Vizio has emerged in a big way as well, also grabbing 40% of the spots on the list. Between the two of them they control 80% of the top 10 selling TVs.
- Panasonic has one TV on the list. It happens to be (tied for) the largest screen size on the list and is the most expensive by a larger margin. It is a Plasma, though, so keep hope alive.
- TCL, the company nobody knows of but seemingly everyone loves, also has an item on the list, a 39” value model LCD TV.
- Sony doesn’t appear in the top 100 until position 55 with the Sony BRAVIA KDL32EX340 32-Inch 720p HDTV in black. It sells for $320.
- Nine of the top ten Televisions are LED, the one remaining TV is a Panasonic plasma. The rumors of plasma’s demise may have been premature.

I think this article adequately makes my point that man cannot live by streaming alone. The Netflix disc was still necessary for us to watch Jack Reacher last night. A little over-dramatic in the first half but it warmed up.
