DIY Speakers - Dayton UA721CK speaker kits

Chris Guebert from Waterloo, IL sent us an email telling us that he was building his own speakers from a kit he bought from Parts Express.  He shared is experience with all us and included some nice pictures as well.

I didn't do much as far as documenting the process. I got too excited to get them finished. Here are the before and after pics. They look small next to the TV, but the TV is 73". They are very detailed, dynamic and have nice base (down to 80hz). They are audiophile quality. They are Dayton UA721CK ($430 each) speaker kits. Took about 3 hours to make the 3 speakers. The first took longer than the other 2, of course. It was pretty easy and fun! Basically, you attach the crossovers (simple high and low pass filters), then sound absorbing foam, then the drivers (2 7" woofers and a 1" tweeter). Of course I simplified it a little. It's pretty simple though. I saved some money, had fun and now can tell everyone I made them when they talk about how good they sound. And if someone breaks in and tries to shoot me, I can hold up my speakers and their kevlar drivers! LOL!

I love this idea , but I'm torn on some issues. Do they really sound better than a 430$ speaker you would just buy? They build process is just doing the final assembly. Your not fabricating the box or anything like that. I'm all for this. I'm just not sure it's worth the trouble. I would want to save a good chunk of change. Maybe the HT guys could do a comparison for us?
