Breaking News: Cablevision To Roll Out RS-DVR

Cablevision To Roll Out RS-DVR In April

Will Stop Buying New DVR Boxes By Year-End

Bottom line, Cablevision is going to move DVR storage from your house to their central servers.  This could be huge.  It completely eliminates the need for multi-room DVR functionality.  You have a player in every room, all of them have access to the central servers, so they can all play anything you've recorded. Could be a really big differentiator for Cable vs. Satellite.

Ideally, over time, this would be integrated with pay-per-view technologies so you have one place to go to watch anything you want.  They could even give you the ability to buy shows you forgot to record, just like you'd do at iTunes or Amazon.

If Cablevision could add more archive titles, you wouldn't need Netflix instant streaming.  If they had all the new release movies available, you wouldn't need Vudu or AppleTV/iTunes.

Makes you wish you could get Cablevision.  Hopefully the rest will follow suit.

Hollywood already sued them once over this. Look for Hollywood to re-word their lawsuit and file it again.

Do you think doing it in this fashion they could muscle any additional advertising on you that one would normally fast word through or strip out?

Is this still happening? I have a Cablevision salesman begging me to switch from Verizon, and he tells me I will have multi-room functionality by December. What's the dilly?

I just had Cablevision install multi room DVR service in my home and it is HORRIBLE.
It often fails to record shows that are "first run only on this channel" which in my opinion is the most important feature. It is slow. It sometimes does not allow you to delete shows that you have already watched. And, customer service will only credit you fees for the day that you call even you've had issues for weeks.
