Samsung Sells One Million LED TVs in Six Months

Manila, Philippines -- Samsung Electronics has become the undisputed leader of the global LED TV market, selling a phenomenal one million units of its first full line of advanced LED HDTVs in just six months since their launch in March. Riding on this success, the company has launched a new campaign to drive further awareness and understanding of the benefits of its LEDHDTVs, as it seeks to further dominate the exploding LED TV market.

“Samsung has leveraged our technological and design leadership to create a new category, market and demand for LED TVs. With shortening product cycles, demand for LED TVs is increasing exponentially and the market potential is immense. Our upcoming marketing initiatives will generate further momentum and propel us towards achieving our target of 3.7 million units in global sales this year,” says Spencer Shim, President and CEO Samsung Electronics Philippines.

Commanding over 90 per cent of the global market, the number of LED TVs sold by Samsung is already more than five times that of all the LED TVs sold in 2008 around the world (196,000). It also exceeds the LCD TVs sold (360,000) in 2003 when Samsung first entered the LCD TV market. The phenomenal sales is fueled by the rapidly growing LED TV market, which is likely to expand from 3.7 million units this year to over 15 million units next year, approximately 40 million units in 2011, and 64 million units in 2012, according to DisplaySearch.

The huge success of Samsung’s LED HDTVs has driven the company’s strong performance in the TV category, helping it capture 23 per cent of the global LCD TV market in Q2 2009. It also contributed to the company achieving over 10 per cent operating margin for its overall TV business division.

To sustain the momentum, Samsung has launched a campaign to drive further awareness and understanding of the benefits of its LED HDTVs. After its introduction last May, Samsung’s state-of-the-art LED HDTVs are prominently displayed in key retail stores to give consumers a chance to experience HD viewing. It has also been featured in leading lifestyle and technology magazines as one of the best buys for home viewing experience.

The world’s thinnest TV at 29.9mm, Samsung’s LED HDTVs offers unrivalled picture quality, featuring cutting edge, proprietary display technologies that allows consumers to experience life in hyperreal. They are also highly eco-friendly from design to manufacturing and distribution, most notably consuming 40 per cent less power than conventional LCDTVs.

In addition to these features, consumers can now also enjoy new interactive Internet@TV content service. The service features a rich set of “TV Widgets”, including “YouTube widgets”, “Accuweather widgets” and “USA Today widgets” to help consumers stay on top of local and international news and happenings with just one touch of the remote control. Watch out for more local widget options that are currently being developed to cater specifically to Filipino market.
