Ara's Home Theater Setup Circa 1998

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this. I found this picture when I was scanning old negatives. Man have we come a long way! The gear included:

  • 27 inch RCA CRT TV
  • SONY VCR
  • SONY DVD Player that decoded 5.1 audio with analog outputs
  • SONY Home Theater Receiver (This was during my time at SONY hence the SONY Gear)
  • JBL Center and Surround Speakers
  • Fisher L/R speakers left over from a Fisher music system
  • No Subwoofer! What was I thinking?

Don't laugh too loud!

1998, eh?

I was in Grade 11 and rocking a pretty similar setup:

27" RCA CRT TV
RCA HTiB (with a SLAMMIN' 1-note 6.5" passive "subwoofer" - lol)
RCA DVD player
Playstation 1

And no, I wasn't any sort of RCA fanboy - they were just the cheapest option at the time!

I have to say though, the less than stellar quality of those early RCA products is what put me on the path to becoming a Home Theater enthusiast! There's nothing like dissatisfaction to pressure someone into the quest to find something better ;)

1998?

27" Mitsubishi 4:3 CRT
Sony xxxx-ES Surround Receiver
Sony DVP-S7000 ($1000 DVD player!)
Sony VCR that I did time shift recording on everything. My late 90s DVR.
